Tarifa is famous for its wind, but it's not "one" wind: there are two, with completely different characters, and understanding them helps a lot when planning your kite or wingfoil week.
The Levante
It blows from the east, is most frequent in spring and summer, and tends to be gustier near the coast because of the nearby mountains. It's a powerful wind, very reliable in the strong months, ideal for long sessions.
The Poniente
It blows from the west, is more common in autumn and winter, and is usually cleaner and steadier than the Levante, with fewer gusts. Many more experienced riders prefer it precisely for that consistency.
How do you know which one will blow?
Specialised wind forecasts are essential before planning a session, and at the school we check several models every morning to decide the best spot and time of day depending on whether the Levante or Poniente is blowing.
- Levante: more frequent in summer, gustier, very reliable in strength.
- Poniente: more frequent in winter, cleaner and steadier.
Neither is "better" in absolute terms: each has its own ideal spots and conditions in Tarifa, and part of learning here is learning to read which one is blowing and what to expect from it.
