More and more families ask us whether their children can learn kitesurfing on the same holiday as their parents. The answer is yes, with the right progression and a bit of patience.
At what age can they start?
There's no magic age: it depends more on weight, swimming ability and the maturity to follow safety instructions than on the exact number of years. In general, from around 10-12 years old and with good swimming skills, most children can start the land phase without any problem.
The progression is the same, but slower
We follow the same order as with adults — theory, land control, body drag, water start — but with smaller kites, shorter sessions and more time on each stage before moving on.
Advantages of learning young
- Less fear of the water and of falling, which speeds up body dragging and the water start.
- Good motor skills to coordinate kite and board.
- Surprisingly fast learning curves once they lose their initial respect.
Family plans
It's common to combine wingfoil or kitesurf lessons for the adults with adapted lessons for the kids at the same time and spot, so the whole family enjoys the water together and everyone learns at their own pace.
