One of the questions we get most before people book a lesson is when to come. The good news is that Tarifa is one of the few places in Europe where you can learn kitesurfing almost all year round, thanks to the Levante and the Poniente, the two winds that take turns in the Strait.
Spring (March-June): the perfect balance
The water is still cool, but the wind becomes regular and the beaches aren't crowded. It's a great time to learn calmly, with more personal lessons and fewer people on the water.
Summer (July-August): more people, more atmosphere
It's high season: strong, very reliable Levante almost every day, warmer water and a beach vibe that gets you hooked. On the other hand, there are more schools and more riders at the spot, so it's best to book ahead.
Autumn (September-November): many instructors' favourite
September and October combine still-warm water, fewer crowds and very consistent wind. Many of our returning students choose this time for exactly that reason.
Winter (December-February): for those already hooked
The Poniente blows hard, the water is colder (a thick wetsuit is essential) and the spot is practically empty. Not the best choice for a first try, but ideal if you can already ride and want intense sessions.
- First time kiting? Spring or autumn.
- Planning a holiday with guaranteed wind? July-August.
- Already riding and want to level up? Any time of year, with a thicker wetsuit in winter.
Whatever month you choose, at Kitesur we adapt the lesson to the real wind on the day, not a fixed calendar, so you make the most of your stay in Tarifa.
